Illiteracy is the lack of the basic listening, speaking, reading, writing or math skills adults need to solve the problems encountered in daily life and participate fully in their society.

About 27 million American adults cannot read well enough to complete a job application, to read a childs bedtime story, or to write a letter to a friend.

Asking for help takes courage. If you know someone who needs help, encourage him or her to call the Literacy Action Corps.

Golden Rule Award

Literacy Action Corps was chosen for as 1999 winner among the Group Nominees for the Golden Rule Award sponsored by J. C. Penney and the Voluntary Action Center. Last year about 102 LAC volunteers worked with 111 people needing help with improving speaking, reading, writing, and math skills. For the last 7 years Literacy Action Corps has worked with an average of 122 people each year.

Literacy Action Corps has been in existence for 31 years, having been one of the charter councils of National Association for Literacy Advance, the former name of Laubach Literacy Action, which was formed in 1968 and began training tutors in that year.

The award consisted of $1,000, which will be used for the purchase of books, tutoring materials, and tutor training.
